Some of the best frames on the Grampians Peaks Trail cost a lot to get.

Over three and a half years I photographed the trail for Parks Victoria, section by section, as it was being built. It was part of the Six Seasons of Gariwerd campaign. That meant walking in with a full pack, carrying camera gear and whatever the shoot needed, and working in places that are hard to reach.

Because the trail was still under construction, some sections didn’t exist yet. On one shoot we had to get around an unbuilt part of the track, and the quickest way was up a rock wall. I went up with my pack on my front, legs braced against one wall and my back against the other. Nobody puts that in a shot list. It’s what the terrain asked of us that day.

Then you come around a corner and there’s something you couldn’t have scouted from a map. Over those years, nearly every corner of the trail gave me something that stopped me in my tracks. It was challenging, and it was worth all of it.

On these shoots I handled the talent, the photography and the art direction. I cast the talent and looked after their travel, accommodation and wardrobe, and I made sure everyone was ready for long days on remote, rocky ground.

I don’t go looking for the shot everyone else already has. I spend time in a place, feel what it is, and shoot from emotion and from what the brand needs to say. I get photos that suit the brand and the brief, and I respect the environment I’m working in. That’s why Parks Victoria brought me back across several shoots between 2018 and 2025.

If you’re planning a campaign that has to be shot on foot, in real terrain, I’d like to hear about it.
